Circular Steel UK 2024

On September 10th, Circular Steel brought together 150 attendees in London for an insightful and collaborative day dedicated to advancing the reuse of structural steel in the construction industry. With over 90 companies represented, the event was a key moment for professionals to share knowledge, explore practical challenges and drive forward innovation in the circular economy.
AJ RFL Client Workshop
Through a partnership with the AJ Retrofit Live event, Circular Steel hosted a Client Workshop on 11th September, the day after the main event. Along with facilitators EMR, Keltbray, Hare and Elliott Wood, a workshop was held with 10 clients, all keen to learn more and collaborate on steel reuse. It was a really valuable session, building on content from the day before.
Panel Sessions
Meeting the Demand — chaired by Holly Price of Keltbray, explored fundamental questions such as how and when to deconstruct buildings for optimal steel recovery, whether there is a real demand for reused steel, and whether incorporating reuse into demolition tenders increases costs.
Writing the Brief — led by Will Arnold of IStructE, tackled common pitfalls that can lead to missed opportunities for steel reuse, and how clients and developers should frame briefs to encourage reuse.
Buying the Stock — chaired by Rob Mumford of Gardiner & Theobald, covered sourcing reusable steel: contractual and insurance considerations, designing with reuse in mind, and timeline effects.
Testing & Fabrication — led by Jonathan Davis, on how reclaimed steel is re-fabricated, special measures and fabrication times.
Lessons Learned — chaired by Brogan MacDonald, wrapped up with real-world examples and reflections.

Around 90% of Elliott Wood's 2023 workload was adaptation or reuse. Two live proof-of-scale projects show what's possible: 180 Piccadilly, involving roughly 480 tonnes of reused steel and believed to be the largest UK reuse project to date, and 20 Giltspur Street, where a floor was jacked up to reuse steel in place.
