Heyne Tillett Steel is an employee-owned structural, civil and geotechnical engineering practice with a reputation for intelligent design and innovative, practical solutions. Established in 2007 by directors Andy Heyne, Mark Tillett and Tom Steel, the practice is now a Certified B Corporation with over 180 staff based in London and Manchester, working with many of the UK’s leading developers and architects.
Recent projects include Holbein Gardens for Grosvenor, which won both Structural and ICE awards for pioneering the reuse of steel and instigated the development of the HTS Stockmatcher tool, and the redevelopment of Denys Lasdun’s Grade II listed IBM building at 76 Southbank for Stanhope. The practice continues to test and develop new structural techniques and technologies through its self-funded research initiative, HTS+.
As engineers we specify on average over 1,000 tonnes of CO2e per year, so it is our collective responsibility to reduce the amount of carbon in our buildings. Structural steel is a key material for modern construction, but it comes at significant environmental cost which must be addressed. Today this means championing direct reuse and recycling, while supporting both the UK steel industry and the global transition to DRI-EAF production.
As founding members of the Engineers Reuse Collective, our preference is to “use less stuff” and reuse where possible. Through research partnerships and pioneer projects with the likes of Innovate UK and Grosvenor, HTS has developed knowledge and open-source tools that support the industry’s transition to circular economy principles and urgently reduce the carbon intensity of the built environment.
